The Global Standard for Packaging Materials debuted in 2001 to safeguard consumers by establishing a baseline for the certification of companies supplying packaging to food manufacturers.
The BRCGS, the world’s leading provider of safety and quality standard certification programs, drafted the original standard and updates it periodically to reflect the latest trends and technology in product safety.
The standard provides a strong foundation for all types of manufacturers to assist in the production of safe packaging materials and to manage product quality to meet customer requirements while remaining compliant.
BRCGS developed the standard to identify product safety, quality, and operational benchmarks that must be in place at a packaging manufacturing operation to live up to its commitment to legal compliance and consumer protection. BRCGS designed the system so that a certification body could assess a company’s premises, operational systems, and processes to evaluate the standard’s criteria.
The accreditation is one of the world’s leading food safety certification standards, used by more than 25,000 certified suppliers in more than 130 countries.
WHAT’S NEW FOR ISSUE 6?
BRCGS drafted Issue 6 after extensive consultation with industry stakeholders to better recognize their risks and requirements. BRCGS worked with “international stakeholders representing different sectors of the packaging materials manufacturing industry, retailers, brand owners, food service companies, certification bodies, and independent technical experts.”
There’s now a renewed focus on good manufacturing practices and better risk management through Hazard Analysis Risk Assessment (HARA) to prevent, eliminate, and reduce quality hazards.
Join John Kukoly, BRCGS Director of Certification Programs, to learn more about the latest developments and how to implement them. With more than 20 years of management experience in the food production and certification industry, including roles in production, quality, engineering and auditing, Kukoly brings a wealth of experience and expertise to BRC and the GFSI technical working groups.
